The lymphatic system works in tandem with the vascular & immune systems. Fluid from the blood vessels is forced out by the pressure and floats between our cells as interstitia. This fluid feeds our cells and helps create space between cells. Naturally this fluid is reabsorbed by the lymphatic system which then transports it to various places in the body to be cleansed and reintroduce it to the vascular system.

When lymph nodes or vessels are deformed, damaged, or removed — the lymphatic system can’t keep pace with the fluid production, resulting in a back up of fluid — edema/swelling. This fluid can build up, and without a working lymphatic system the fluid stagnates in the tissue, proteins in the fluid begin to stick together and thicken. These protein masses can adhere to the surrounding cells and gradually becomes harder and harder until it becomes a fibrous mass devoid of flexibility.

The limb may gradually discolor and the texture of the skin becomes dry and brittle over time. The skin at this stage is at risk of necrosis (cell death), due to the lack of circulation. The limb is at heightened risk of infections that can lead to sepsis or amputation. Until recently, amputation was a regular treatment for severe lymphedema in the United States.
